Hawkes Bay is made up of two major ranges; Kaweka's and Ruahine's.
Four major rivers start from the head of these rough back country. Tukituki. Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro and the Mohaka. Not to mention countless contributories feeding these main waterways all the way to the ocean. In Hawkes Bay we have such a variety of flyfishing available. From fishing the large gin clear rivers in their headwaters or navigating in the bush lined streams to fishing the more open braided sections.
We are spoilt for choice having so many waterways to fish and one problem when visiting Hawkes Bay or starting fly fishing is where to start?
Luckily for you, I have spent many years working out where to fish throughout the calendar year. Hawkes Bay does have year round trout fishing available if you know where to go. The trout season is from 1st October to 1st June, however very large sections of the main river systems are open year round and can produce some very good fish through the colder winter months.
The exciting thing about our diverse seasons in Hawkes Bay is that it presents so many different methods to catch fish. From casting bombs to bottom hugging fish in pools to casting single unweighted flies towards wary trout in slow moving water.
